THE PROVENANCE

 

Luci’deMila bags are hand crafted at the tip of the African continent, in the beautiful city of Cape Town, by a small family run business, “Cape Cobra”, with a long tradition in the leather trade. The forefathers of “Cape Cobra” emerged from the German town of Offenbach, well known as the “leather city”.

Founded in South Africa in 1972, Cape Cobra’s manufacturing business has developed particular expertise in the highly specialised art of handcrafted exotic leather goods. Since then they have passed their passion for quality and perfection on to a new generation of African artisans, most of whom are women.

 

THE CRAFT & THE ECONOMY OF SOUL

 

In the fast world of fashion, where almost everything is produced by machines  and economies of scale, Luci’deMila bags stand apart. They carry the warmth of the agile hands of South African leather artisans that make them with utmost love and care.

Each Luci’deMila bag is a piece of meticulous craft. From skin cutting and stitching, to hand staining and final inspection, each craftsman puts her heart and soul into her work. Everything is painstakingly done by hand.

Long hours of the utmost concentration and precision (sometimes up to three days) are needed to fashion each unique piece- the Perfect Companion that will blend with your body and connect to your soul. A limited edition collection and small production numbers mean that Luci’deMila does not come from the economy of scale but is always about economy of soul, lucid luxury made in Africa.

 

THE STORY

 

While living in South  Africa, Lucy Bosscher, the founder, once stayed on an ostrich farm in Oudtshoorn. It was there that she discovered the unique beauty of ostrich skin.  Returning to Cape Town, a chance encounter led her to the door of a manufacturer steeped in the old-school European tradition of handcrafting exotic skins… And so the story of Luci’deMila begins

“Fed up with the sameness and ubiquity of global brands and the hysteria around the seasonal “must haves”, I wanted to create a lucid, perfectly timeless luxury bag where the focus is on quality, craftsmanship, functional design and provenance”, says Lucy Bosscher. “In the fast world of fashion, where almost everything is produced by machines  and economies of scale, I longed for products that carry the warmth of human hands, in other words, made by economy of soul.”

 

 

THE PRECIOUS SKINS

 

Luci’deMila selects only the finest exotic leather – ostrich, crocodile, python and lizard. All skins are sourced locally in South Africa and are obtained under rigid international CITES regulations (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species) from either farmed or ranged animals. Each bag has a CITES certificate to ensure that no skins of endangered species have been used.
